Insurance Fraud

An insurance fraud is committed when people file fake insurance claims in order to collect money from an insurance provider. In the United States, The Coalition Against Insurance Fraud estimates these kinds of claims to cost up to $80 billion per year, while false Medicare claims cost $179 billion per year. Health insurance and car insurance fraud are two major kinds of insurance frauds.

Health Insurance fraud is when a patient or a health care provider tries to get health care benefits erroneously paid, due to misrepresenting, withholding, or giving false information. This can include trying to insure people who are not allowed to be insured by a particular policy, changing enrollment forms, hiding pre-existing conditions, not indicating that there is additional insurance coverage, prescription drug falsehoods, or not reporting claims related to problems incurred while on the job. This can also include submitting claims from doctors who don’t exist, who make claims for services that weren’t done or done at lower costs than what are submitted, or submitting claims with a suspended or revoked medical license. Health care fraud is a federal crime that carries big fines as well as up to ten years of prison time.

Auto Insurance fraud can include staged accidents, where a group of people in a car all make injury claims, often in tandem with a doctor who has been recruited to support these claims, after the driver of the car drives erratically and causes another car to collide with the first car. They can also include exaggerated claims, which happen when an auto owner is in an actual accident, but includes prior minor damage to the car as part of the accident claim.
