Health Care Fraud

Health care fraud is when health care claims are filed in order to make money and the claims are false. This can include reselling unneeded medications for profit, billing for care never received, filing inaccurate paperwork for medical claims, falsely changing medical records to support health care claims, forgoing member co-pays, hiring unlicensed staff, and/or prescribing treatment that isn’t necessary.

It can also include when people who have health insurance give erroneous details when applying for services, illegally selling or using prescription medications, and allowing another person to use individual health insurance who is not authorized to do so. Health care fraud significantly raises costs that are passed on to consumers. Those convicted of health care fraud are subject to fines, jail time, and possibly having one’s medical license revoked.
