If a person has been convicted of a crime, that person may receive probation as a sentence instead of a prison term, or following a release from some kind of confinement, including drug rehab, or after doing community service or paying a fine. Probation is a time where the person must show good behavior and typically reports to a special office such as a parole officer or other person overseeing court supervision.
