In Massachusetts, arraignment occurs when a person is officially told what the charges are against him or her. The charges are read aloud or are given to the person, known as the defendant. The person is told about his or her rights, and then enters a plea of guilty or not guilty to the charges. The decision is also made whether the defendant will be given or denied bail, the amount of bail set, or whether the person can be released on his or her own recognizance.
