The area that makes up modern-day Lawrence, Massachusetts was first settled by Europeans in 1640 and was incorporated as a city in 1845. The city is named after the 19th century merchant and congressman Abbott Lawrence who, along with a group of wealthy Boston industrialists, purchased the land in 1845.
Following the purchase and incorporation of Lawrence, MA, numerous textile mills were built in the area. Lawrence was the first planned industrial city in the United States. The newly established textile industry took advantage of the city’s close proximity to the Merrimack River and utilized the flow of the river to generate power. In preparation for the construction and operation of the mills, the Merrimack River was dammed and a canal was dug along the banks to harness the waterpower.
Due to the city’s cultural diversity, it is commonly referred to as the “Immigrant City.” Beginning in the 1840s, waves of immigrants began to arrive in Lawrence in search of work in the textile industry. The cultural diversity of Lawrence has played an important role in shaping the identity of the city.
Today, Lawrence is home to over 75,000 residents. The city is located in Essex County and is part of the Merrimack Valley. To this day, Lawrence remains an important manufacturing center. The industry comprises approximately 35% of the city’s economy.
