Somerville was first settled as a part of Charlestown in 1630. Early in Somerville’s history, the area was commonly known as “Charlestown beyond the neck.” The region was established as a separate town in 1842 before being subsequently incorporated as a city in 1872. Somerville is culturally diverse and boasts a rich history.
During the American Revolution, the modern day area of Somerville was of vital military importance to the colonies. Somerville is home to the historic “Powder House” which stored gunpowder for Revolutionary soldiers during the war. In addition, the first Grand Union Flag was raised on January 1, 1776 under the orders of General George Washington on Somerville’s Prospect hill. Furthermore, Paul Revere rode through Somerville on his horse during his famous “Midnight Ride.”
Today, Somerville has grown into a large Middlesex County city and is now home to over 75,000 residents. The city is geographically divided into numerous squares and hills. The seven “hills” of Somerville are Central Hill; Clarendon Hill; Cobble Hill; Mount Benedict (Plowed Hill); Mount Pisgah (Prospect Hill); Spring Hill; and Winter Hill. In addition to the seven hills of Somerville, the city also encompasses Assembly Square; Ball Square; Davis Square; Gilman Square; Magoun Square; Powder House Square; Teele Square; Union Square; and Wilson Square.
